Report: Man arrested in Bridges slaying

Nairobi, Kenya--Kenyan police told Reuters they have arrested a man in last week's slaying of tsavorite founder Campbell Bridges, who was fatally stabbed on his land in Kenya in a violent attack that was prompted by a mining dispute.

"The suspect believed to be the main organizer of the brutal murder was arrested by the police at the Kenyan border town of Taveta in hiding," Herbert Khaemba, police commander in the Taita Taveta region where the killing took place, told Reuters.

He also said that police were still pursuing other suspects who were armed with "crude weapons" during the attack.

Khaemba told the news organization that the suspect was the chairman of small-scale miners in the area and led the group that attacked Bridges over a mining dispute.

Bridges, his son Bruce and their security team were attacked on Aug. 11, when a mob that was reportedly armed with machetes, spears and bows and arrows ambushed the Bridges' vehicle while they were driving in the Taita Taveta District in Tsavo National Park in Kenya. Bruce Bridges has said that the attack was connected to a three-year dispute over access and control of Bridges' gemstone mines, part of his company, Tsavorite USA.

Bridges, 71, is credited with discovering the green garnet that was dubbed tsavorite after Kenya's Tsavo National Park, near where Bridges discovered the gem.

A funeral service for Bridges is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 21.
