GIA GemFest to discuss pink-red diamonds, corundum

September 14, 2009

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) GemFest Hong Kong will be held on Sept. 23 in conjunction with the annual Hong Kong Jewellery and Gem Fair.

Lectures by two pre-eminent GIA researchers will be presented:

--Red, Hot and Rare--GIA on Pink-Red Diamonds

Dr. Wuyi Wang, GIA Laboratory New York Director of Research and Development, will deliver the institute's latest observations and findings on one of the hottest colored diamonds in the marketplace today. Attendees will receive information on the color origin of pink-red diamonds, the most common treatments used to enhance color and how GIA distinguishes between natural, treated and synthetic varieties.

--Corundum--How GIA determines country-of-origin

Kenneth Scarratt, managing director of GIA Southeast Asia and director of the GIA Laboratory in Bangkok, Thailand, will talk about corundum, how its origin directly impacts price and why obtaining an independent laboratory report is of paramount importance before buying or selling this gemstone. Attendees will also learn about the GIA's ongoing research in determining country-of-origin and how these research findings ensure the accuracy and consistency of its ruby, sapphire and emerald reports.

GemFest Hong Kong will be held from 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Room S421. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. An RSVP is required and must be received by Sept. 18.

To RSVP to GIA GemFest, call 852 2303 0075, fax 852 2334 0567 or e-mail giahk@netvigator.com.
