GIA postpones research conference

Carlsbad, Calif.--The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has postponed its Second Gemological Research Conference (GRC), scheduled for Aug. 21-23, 2009, in San Diego, Calif., pending improvements in the economy.

The GIA said in a media release that taking this action is especially difficult considering the enthusiasm and synergy that so many people have contributed to planning the event; however, the success of the conference is dependent on attracting participants from diverse backgrounds and geographic areas, and "the current economic climate has created significant budget and travel restrictions for many."

Those who have already registered for the conference will be receiving a full refund of their registration fees within the next few weeks.

"GIA greatly appreciates all of the ideas and energy that have been contributed to the 2009 GRC," GRC Co-chair Brendan Laurs said in the release. "We look forward to the time when we can put our GRC plans back into action."
