New York—The International Gemological Institute (IGI) has appointed Dr. Sonal Rege-Delpech to its research and development department, where she will be responsible for IGI educational projects and the coordination, development and application of new technologies within the IGI School of Gemology worldwide.

Rege-Delpech is a gemologist with more than 10 years of industry experience. She worked as lead gemologist at IGI Mumbai during its founding years before pursuing a doctorate in geology at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, specializing in "diamond fingerprinting."

Her work contributed to the development of a cutting-edge technique used in the analysis of elemental impurities found in diamonds and earned her a position among the finalists at the 2005 Macquarie University Innovation Awards in the Postgraduate Innovation category.

IGI Chief Executive Officer Roland Lorié believes Rege-Delpech will add another dimension to the IGI School of Gemology, which is already recognized internationally for its innovative curricula and invaluable learning experiences.

"She will join IGI's team of skilled instructors and, collectively, they will continue to develop new ways of teaching to best provide IGI's students the practical knowledge necessary for advancement in the industry, in a short period of time," Lorié said in a statement.

The IGI is the only worldwide laboratory to earn International Organization for Standards (ISO) accreditation in five countries: Canada, Hong Kong, India, United Arab Emirates and the United States. It was established in 1975 and has locations in Antwerp, Belgium; Bangkok, Thailand; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Kolkata, India; Los Angeles; Mumbai, India; New York; Tokyo; and Toronto.
