Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will host GemFest Basel on April 5 during BaselWorld to discuss the modern luxury market.

David Arnold, senior vice president and group publisher of CurtCo Robb Media LLC, will be the keynote speaker. His company publishes the Robb Report and Showboats International magazines targeted to the world's most affluent readers.

Arnold will present a snapshot of the modern high-net-worth individual and will discuss worldwide trends in wealth, along with affluence proliferation facts and figures. He will also give an overview into the psychographic factors that shape the lives of this influential population in "Perceptions of Wealth vs. Reality."

In addition, he will also discuss how to adapt sales and branding messages to this group of buyers.

A panel discussion on recent trends in the luxury diamond market will complement Arnold's talk. Topics will include how goods are sold, supply and demand, and future outlooks.

Panel members will include: Francois Curiel, chairman of Christie's, on the auction house perspective of the large diamond market; Amit Dhamani, managing director of Dhamani Jewels, representing the luxury diamond-manufacturing point of view; Jean-Marc Lieberherr, general manager of Rio Tinto Diamonds N.V., with the mining perspective; and Tom Moses, senior vice president of GIA Laboratory and Research, representing the GIA laboratory outlook.

A question and answer session will follow.

"GemFest Basel promises to be immensely rewarding for attendees, who can expect to benefit from its lessons long after they have returned home," GIA Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Kathryn Kimmel said in a media release.

The free event will take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Hall Montreal of the Basel Convention Center. A reception will follow.

The GIA Alumni Association sponsors GemFest Basel. Alumni who attend will receive six carat points.

Those who wish to attend the GIA's GemFest Basel should RSVP by March 31 by calling (760) 603-4205, e-mailing events@gia.edu or visiting the GIA's Alumni Association Web site, GIA.edu/alumni.
