Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) invites trade members and GIA alumni to a discussion on the institute's new pearl reports at its "GemFest Basel" event, to be held on April 14 at the Basel Convention Center in Basel, Switzerland.

Titled "Sorting It All Out: GIA's Pearl Report and Industry Opportunities," the discussion will feature a panel of pearl-industry specialists, including Shigeru Akamatsu, senior manager of sales division K for Mikimoto and Co.; Jacques Branellec, managing director of Jewelmer International Corp.; Martin Coeroli, general manager of Perles de Tahiti; and Nicholas Paspaley, executive chairman of Paspaley Pearls. The panel will speak on the state of the pearl industry and on pearl reports in general.

Ken Scarratt, director of GIA Research, Thailand, will also offer specific details into the GIA's updated pearl report.

"GemFest Basel offers the pearl industry the opportunity to discuss the structure and content of the new GIA pearl report with more detail than has been shared previously," GIA Laboratory and Research Senior Vice President Tom Moses said in a statement. "This report comes with more descriptions of pearl attributes than ever before, reflecting both the tremendous growth in the pearl industry and the industry's greater input into the report itself."

Admission to GemFest Basel is free, but the GIA asks that attendees RSVP by sending an e-mail to events@gia.edu by April 5. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. GIA alumni who attend the event will receive six Carat Points.
