GIA offers expanded reports for colored gems

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced several new services to be offered with its newly enhanced Colored Gemstone Identification Reports.

Among the offerings are priority turnaround services, volume discounts, new Analytical Reports and Quality Assurance Reports.

Each Identification Report documents the results of a full examination of a material and gives such identifying characteristics as color, transparency, shape, cut, measurements and weight, in addition to a color photo. When possible and when requested, the GIA will also offer country-of-origin opinions on certain stones.

The lab's new Analytical Reports and Quality Assurance Reports provide additional information. The Analytical Reports discuss such characteristics as fluorescence, inclusions, color distribution, and UV/visible, IR and Raman spectroscopy and chemistry, as appropriate; and the latter reports deal with sorting, batch testing, preliminary testing and beryllium testing for corundum.

To more easily facilitate delivery of reports, the GIA is launching a new priority rush service on its Identification Reports and Analytical Reports. The service will guarantee that a report is delivered within 48 hours of receipt of the item, excluding weekends and holidays.

Finally, the GIA will also offer a volume discount service for its Identification Reports and Analytical Reports. When 10 or more stones of the same type are submitted for the same report category, a 25 percent reduction will be applied to the total fee. When more than 30 stones are submitted during one calendar month, a 25 percent price reduction will be applied. This service, however, is limited to clients with monthly accounts and for reports that are not already reduced in cost.

"The GIA Laboratory has made a four-part commitment to the industry: to provide additional services to our clients, to add significant capacity, to perform the work in half the time that it previously took and to accomplish this without sacrificing any of our standards," GIA Laboratory and Research Senior Vice President Tom Moses said in a statement. "This set of new services is part of that new commitment to customer service in a rapidly changing and vastly expanding global industry."
