New York—The International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA), which has been eager to tap into new business opportunities in fast-growing markets, has appointed gem dealer and professor Yu Xiaojin as its new ICA Ambassador to the People's Republic of China.

Xiaojin replaces the former ambassador, Zhengfa Liu, who retired from the trade.

"We are enthusiastic about the appointment of Yu Xiaojin to represent ICA in China," ICA President Joseph Menzie said in a press release issued on Thursday. "China is an important frontier for the gem and jewelry industry, and our new ambassador is in a unique position to help us achieve our goals for this fast-growing market."

Xiaojin is president of Bonny Gemstone Inc. in Beijing and also teaches mineralogy and gemology at the Beijing University of Science and Technology. Active in the trade, he serves as the vice secretary-general of the Gems and Jewelry Trade Association of China and handles international public relations for the association, which includes overseeing the publication of reports and market studies on the Chinese market, as well as leading delegations from China to visit major trade fairs around the world. A seasoned veteran of the gem and jewelry industry, he has helped organize international trade shows in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

"It is my great honor to be the ICA ambassador to China," Xiaojin said in the release. "I am looking forward to providing the much-needed inside information on China to ICA for broader distribution. I am looking forward to working on behalf of ICA and accelerating the progress of the colored-gemstone trade."

Xiaojin's appointment brings the number of current ICA ambassadors to 36 worldwide. Several additional countries have just been added and will be announced soon, according to the ICA.

In other ICA news, the association has announced that its fourth ICA International Poster Competition will take place at the upcoming ICA Congress in Dubai, from May 5-9, 2007.

The competition, open to ICA members, members of the colored-stone community at large, graphic designers and art students, centers on finding new, creative ways to promote the usage, appreciation and trade of colored gemstones.

Each designer may submit up to three different poster designs, which will be exhibited during the ICA Congress and used by the association in its publications to promote colored gemstones worldwide. Prizes will be awarded to the top-three winners at the ICA Congress Gala Dinner.

The deadline for submitting the posters is Dec. 31. For information on entry guidelines and prizes, visit www.gemstone.org.
