Law enforcement tackles GIA gem training

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graduated its first class composed entirely of law enforcement officials.

The 13 graduates of the "GIA Enforcement Class 1-08 D-Flawless" completed an intensive two-week course on gemological training and fraud prevention.

The course was composed of FBI agents and Task Force Officers who serve on special gem and jewelry task forces in their own territories. FBI agents came from offices in New York, Washington, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Diego, and Task Force Officers hailed from the Miami Dade Police Department, New York City Police Department, Los Angeles Police Department and the San Diego County Sheriff's office.

The curriculum for the course was developed in cooperation with the Violent Crime Section of the FBI's Criminal Investigative Division. Students first became familiar with the physical tools of the trade and studying the various gemstones and their properties, and then learned about the Kimberly Process and the mechanics of the diamond and gemstone businesses.

"This two-week class was coordinated with the FBI after the one-day seminar held last year proved to be very beneficial to law enforcement," GIA Director of Security Larry Wright said in a media release. "The intensity with which these particular students went after gemological knowledge was amazing. These officers now have knowledge of gemology they can immediately apply to cases at home."

Immediately after graduating, the officials formed the first GIA Law Enforcement Alumni Chapter.
