IGI brings holiday cheer to NYC commuters

New York—For the second year in a row, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) is sponsoring a Metro Card giveaway for commuters rushing through Shea Stadium in Queens, N.Y., during the busy holiday season.

The IGI has donated 350 round-trip ($4) Metro Cards, which will be distributed to commuters who park at the stadium and then use mass transit to enter Manhattan. Cards were given away yesterday and will also be available on Dec. 27 and Jan. 3.

The promotion is through the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City. It is designed to encourage people to use public transportation and avoid New York City's holiday gridlock.

"The holiday season is one of the best times to enjoy New York, which explains why so many people flock here to shop, see a show or just take in the festive atmosphere," said New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Iris Weinshall in a statement. "We want everyone who can to come and visit New York this holiday season, and the safest, fastest and most affordable way to do that is aboard the city's mass-transit system."

The cards will be given out at the Shea Stadium parking lot entrance at Roosevelt Avenue between 114th and 126th Streets from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on the designated dates.

"We hope our donation helps to ease commuter congestion as well as add to the wonderful experience of shopping for gemstones and fine jewelry in Manhattan during the holiday season," IGI President Jerry Ehrenwald said.
