Giant red spinel crystal discovered in East Africa

October 07, 2007

A piece of pyramid-shaped red spinel was mined from a farmer’s field in Mahenge, Tanzania. Weighing more than 52kgs, the orangey pinkish-red crystal nearly caused a riot among the hundreds of diggers working nearby at the time it was discovered.

The rush is still being processed and is expected to translate into several thousand carats of gems worth several million dollars. A number of stones ranging between 5 and 30 carats have already been faceted and sold. “One piece is expected to cut a near clean stone over 50 carats.”

At the moment, the strong euro makes selling the stones in Europe more attractive. Multicolour Gems in Bankgok Thailand is offering a selection of them on their Web site.
