Gem-A CEO to address ICA Congress on gem ed

London--Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jack Ogden will address the 13th International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) Congress in Panyu, China, next month on "gem education for the 21st century."

According to Ogden, it is difficult for a gemology student to become familiar with all the possible varieties of gems, synthetics, imitations and treatments in the market today. Therefore, a gemology student has to be provided with a good understanding of the underlying factors that cause and influence a gem's properties.

"In a sense, we need to prepare a gemologist not only to recognize what they don't know, but also to be able to make intelligent deductions about a gem, or features of a gem, that he or she has never observed before," Ogden said in a media release. "The challenge is to achieve the right scientific balance and keep the courses appealing."

Ogden said Gem-A's newly updated gemology courses, which will be rolled out to Gem-A teaching centers worldwide over the coming year, accomplish this.

Gem-A has five Allied Teaching Centers in China and three in Hong Kong. Graduates of Gem-A's Gemology Diploma from these or other worldwide centers may be elected to fellowship status and use the famous FGA designation.

For more information about Gem-A, contact Arianna Maccaferri at arianna@gem-a.com or visit the organization's Web site, Gem-a.com.

This 13th International Colored Gemstone Association Congress, considered the largest jewelry industry conference ever to be held in China, will provide an international forum to discuss the issues facing the colored-gemstone and jewelry industry. It will be held from May 5-10 in Panyu, China.
