San Diego, Calif.— The Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) will host a conference in Tucson on Jan. 31 to discuss such topics as synthetic-diamond nomenclature and gemstone classification and origin.

Shane McClure and Christopher Smith, chief researchers for the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), will present their new research findings on determination of country of gem origin based on a classification system that may be used on future gemstone-identification reports. Richard Drucker and Stuart Robertson of the GemGuide will then show how country of origin affects gem prices.

Panel discussions on synthetic diamonds, diamond nomenclature and HTHP diamonds will be presented by Jim Shigley of the GIA, Thom Chatham of Chatham Created Gems, S. Clark McEwen of Gemesis Corp., Donna Beaton of EGL and Russ Meyer of Sundance Diamond. Panel discussions on appraisals, investment fraud and other timely issues will be presented by Cecilia Gardner of the Jewelers Vigilance Committee, jewelry expert Antoinette L. Matlins, Richard Drucker of GemGuide, David Bidwell of EGL and appraiser Kirk Root.

The conference will conclude with dinner, dancing and an awards ceremony where this year's winner of the Anthony Bonanno Excellence in Gemology award will be announced.

The conference will be held at the Marriott University Park in Tucson from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information or to register, visit Accreditedgemologists.org or call G-Force Services at (619) 501-5444 for a registration form.
