GIA to host GemFest Asia 2007

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) will host GemFest Asia—Hong Kong 2007: State of the Global Jewelry Industry on Sept. 27, in conjunction with the annual Hong Kong Jewellery and Watch Fair.

The program will run from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibit Centre.

GIA School of Business Dean Dr. Mink Stavenga, GIA Laboratory and Research Senior Vice President Tom Moses and GIA Laboratory Thailand Director of Research Ken Scarratt will discuss the latest research and trends in gems and jewelry.

"We plan to discuss increased competition from other luxury product categories, the changing patterns of consumer consumption and the impact of different financing methods and distribution channels in the jewelry industry," said Stavenga, who will give an overview of current global jewelry conditions and how these are evolving.

Moses and Scarratt will give a lab update that will address new pearl treatments, recent developments with beryllium-diffused corundum, the latest in diamond treatments and the lab's international expansion.

The event also commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Japan and Hong Kong GIA Alumni Association chapters and will honor them with plaques.

GIA alumni who attend GemFest Asia will receive six carat points in the Alumni Circle of Achievement. Admission is free, but space will be limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
