Tanzanite Foundation bestows first-ever design awards

New York—African dancers and drummers welcomed hundreds of guests to The New York Public Library on Monday night for the Tanzanite Foundation's Celebration of Life Jewelry Design Awards ceremony.

Jewelry designers from more than 20 countries submitted pieces for the inaugural awards. A panel of judges selected 21 winners based on beauty, design originality and interpretation of the theme "Be Born to Tanzanite."

Charlotte Ehinger-Schwarz 1876, a winner in the manufacturer category, pays tribute to Tanzania's landscape and wildlife with this magnificent necklace. A giraffe, elephant and ape nestle among rubies, tsavorite and zoisite, while a detachable drop showcases a 25.29-carat pear-cut tanzanite.

The winners are as follows:

Luxury-brand category: Kwiat, Maria Webster for Boodles, Shaun Leane, Stephen Webster and Talento Joias.

Independent-designer category: Dima, Laurence Ratinau, Maria Canale for Suna Bros., Rodrigo Robson and Sevan Bicakci.

Manufacturer category: Charlotte Ehinger-Schwarz 1876, Colin Waylett, Ginny Dizon, Ruth Grieco and Zoltan David.

"Rising Star" category: Arabel Lebrusan, Claire Woolley, James Powell and Sabine Roemer.

Accessories category: Louis Mariette and Stuart Weitzman with Levian.
