GIA names new managing director

October 09, 2007

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has named Nirupa Pandya Bhatt as its new managing director for India and the Middle East, effective Jan. 1, 2008.

According to GIA President Donna Baker, Bhatt will be responsible for the GIA's expansion in India, Israel and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, providing on-site management and in-country guidance for the setup and operation of the India Laboratory, the Dubai School and similar future projects, including GIA educational offerings in Israel. Bhatt will also provide direct oversight to the GIA schools in Dubai and India, as well as their respective school directors.

Bhatt and her team will also further research in the GIA India Laboratory, identifying and disclosing the gemological character of diamonds, be it natural, treated or synthetic.

Baker said they are delighted to have Bhatt join the GIA.

"[Bhatt] is a leader of tremendous stature and goodwill in our industry and brings superior personal and ethical strengths and organizational capabilities to the institute," Baker said in a press release. "In her new role, she will help our organization further its mission to protect the public by establishing and expanding GIA's international standards in India and the Middle East."

Prior to joining the GIA, Bhatt worked for Rio Tinto Diamonds (RTD), owner of the Argyle and Diavik Diamond mines. Part of her responsibilities included managing and initiating programs to support RTD customers and production. This included the Indo Argyle Diamond Council, known for changing the perception of Indian jewelry in the United States, and the Business Excellence Model, an initiative for an industry-specific certification process toward operational standards for diamond and jewelry manufacturers and retailers.

Bhatt has won awards for her work such as the "Doyenne of the Year" award from the U.S.-based Indian Diamond and Colorstone Association in 2002; the "Eminent Personality of the Year" award from the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council in 2003; and the Women's Jewelry Association "Award for Excellence" under the category of Special Services and Education in 2005.
