PGI-USA names Platinum Couture winners

June 16, 2009
Hearts On Fire was one of five winners in the Platinum Couture Style Challenge. The brand's "Valence" ring featuring more than 2.5 carats of diamonds set in platinum won in the platinum couture bridal atelier category.

New York--Platinum Guild International (PGI-USA) once again joined forces with the Couture show to host the Platinum Couture Style Challenge, the second annual competition naming five top jewelry designers working in platinum.

More than 40 pieces were entered into this year's contest, and a group of top fashion, accessory and trade editors scored each piece from one to five based upon the item's originality, wearability and appropriateness in its category.

Winners of the 2009 competition include: Erica Courtney, for platinum couture red carpet; Gurhan, for platinum couture luxury for everyday; Tom Munsteiner, for platinum couture colors; Hearts On Fire, for platinum couture bridal atelier; and Shaesby, for platinum couture bridal boutique.

Courtney won for a platinum chain featuring bezel-set rose-cut diamonds with a queen's charm, while Gurhan garnered its award for a one-of-a-kind ring showcasing a faceted Mexican opal set in pure platinum with granulation accents. Munsteiner, meanwhile, won for a platinum bracelet set with a 29.26-carat aquamarine. In the bridal categories, Hearts On Fire was honored for a platinum modern bridal ring with more than 2.5 carats of diamonds accented by wirework, and Shaeby garnered nods for its platinum "Lily" bridal ring featuring 0.7 carats of diamonds.

In addition to presenting the top designers with an official Platinum Couture Style Challenge trophy on Sunday, May 31, PGI-USA announced that the winners will each receive a valuable promotion package and will be featured in at least two of PGI-USA's consumer media programs in 2009-2010.

"The Platinum Couture Style Challenge has turned into one of the main attractions at the Vegas shows, PGI-USA Senior Vice President Jenny Luker said in a media release. "PGI and Couture designed this event to increase visibility and awareness for outstanding platinum pieces. The media plays a key role in both consumer and retailer buying habits, so we hope that the additional exposure of this contest will have a positive effect on all of its participants."
