GIA Carlsbad closes for fire-safety concerns

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America's (GIA) world headquarters in Carlsbad is closed today due to safety concerns stemming from the wildfires that are affecting the San Diego area.

According to a statement on the GIA's Web site, GIA.edu, the organization's headquarters and Robert Mouawad Campus in Carlsbad are not in danger from the fires, but are closed because of concerns from local government, law enforcement and safety authorities. This includes administrative offices, all classes, the GIA Laboratory and GIA Gem Instruments.

Kathryn Kimmel, GIA vice president and chief marketing officer, has confirmed for National Jeweler that the GIA headquarters and Robert Mouawad Campus are not in a fire zone and therefore safe, and that there is security present. She has also confirmed that both the Los Angeles and New York educational locations are open, as well as the GIA Laboratory in New York.

For clients or students who need information or assistance, please contact the Los Angeles branch at (866) 702-2088 or the New York branch at (800) 366-8519.

GIA clients, students and staff can also check back on the GIA's site for information regarding the institute's operations for Wednesday, Oct. 24.

According to the latest news reports, at least 16 wildfires have burned about 425 square miles from north of Los Angeles to southeast of San Diego since the weekend. The fires have destroyed about 1,300 homes across Southern California and threaten some 72,000 others as they're fueled by hot weather and the Santa Ana winds. Tens of thousands of Californians have evacuated their homes for evacuation centers.

President Bush issued an emergency declaration today for seven California counties—Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura—clearing the way for federal disaster relief.
