Italian jeweler Bulgari boycotts Myanmar gems

In a recent statement regarding its ban on gems from Myanmar, Bulgari declared that it has never bought gems directly in the country, "only on the international markets." The world's third-largest jeweler said it has informed suppliers that the origin of the stones they provide is required.

Myanmar has been the focus of recent media attention since its violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators, inciting jewelers to support a boycott on gems from the country. Jeweler Tiffany and Co. ceased buying rubies from the country back in 2003 after the U.S. Congress enacted an import ban with a loophole allowing dealers to continue importing stones cut and polished elsewhere.
