Decision to protect red coral reversed

June 15, 2007

The proposal to list red coral as a protected species was reversed just two days after it was initially passed. In a plenary session, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco—all exporting countries—instigated the vote by secret ballot. The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) requires a two-thirds majority for a listing, and this time the votes fell short.

The reversal, which took place after the conference was scheduled to end, was considered unusual and deplorable by some, including Dawn M. Martin, president of SeaWeb. The NGO originally petitioned the United States to propose the listing. Martin says now the responsibility lies with consumers and the industry to make sure we "do not love coral to death."

Fernanda Kellog, senior vice president of Tiffany and Co. and president of The Tiffany and Co. Foundation, says the company won't use red coral in their jewelry until harvesting methods no longer threaten the survival of the species.
