ICA to promote colored gemstones in Panyu, China

Guangzhou, China—The International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) has signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" to promote the gem and jewelry trade in the district of Panyu, China.
The memorandum was signed in conjunction with the
China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Panyu Branch during the Hong Kong Jewellery and Watch Fair.
An ICA delegation, led by ICA President Andrew Cody, pledged to work closely on a new CCPIT initiative that will mark 2008 as the "Thematic Year of Colored Stone Promotion." During the memorandum signing, Cody assured the delegation representing the Chinese government that the ICA was ready and willing to provide the necessary support for the industry.
Tan Ying-hua, secretary of the Chinese Communist Party of Panyu District and chief director of People's Congress, Panyu, in turn assured the ICA that government officials are placing the utmost importance on promoting the gem and jewelry trade in Panyu.
In addition, CCPIT Chairman Li Zhi-wei indicated that the CCPIT is already planning to continue the Year of Colored Gemstone Promotion in 2009, especially in light of the ICA's commitment to participate.
Panyu, located in the city of Guangzhou, hosts more than 300 jewelry-manufacturing companies, the ICA said in a statement. According to government statistics, jewelry exports from Hong Kong in 2006 totaled $5.49 billion, of which $1.16 billion worth of jewelry was manufactured in Panyu.
