Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has created a set of downloadable podcasts that jewelers and gemologists can use to continue their education.
Among the diverse topics featured on the audio and video downloads are a look at the sights and sounds of an Imperial topaz mine in Brazil, a seminar on laser-drilled diamonds and a tutorial on accounting basics.
The podcasts are available through iTunes U, an Apple Inc. initiative that allows U.S. colleges and universities to easily deliver educational content online.
The GIA has posted more than 100 podcasts—which play on personal computers or MP3 players—to iTunes U. Most podcasts run five minutes or less. The GIA's course-development office creates new podcasts regularly.
To access the podcasts, visit the GIA's
Continuing Education page on its Web site and click "Register for My GIA" in the lower right corner. By completing the forms, you will establish a "My GIA" user ID, and you will receive a password via e-mail. You will also need to download and install Apple's free iTunes software.
