South Woodstock, Vt.—Fancy-colored-diamond treatments and consumer-protection issues will be at the top of the agenda at the Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) 2007 Las Vegas Conference, to be held on June 1 during the JCK Las Vegas show.

"Treated Diamonds: A New Age of Color-Altered Diamonds" will focus on understanding the differences between color-treatment techniques and being able to spot temporary treatments. Panel speakers include John Koivula, chief gemologist of the Gemological Institute of America; Don Palmieri, chief executive officer of the Gem Certification and Assurance Lab; Chris Smith, vice president of gem-identification services for the American Gemological Laboratories (AGL); and Jay Neogi, chief executive officer of Serenity Technologies. Following the discussion will be a workshop in which participants will have the opportunity to examine stones firsthand.

The next panel discussion, "Consumer Protection Issues: Exploring Remedies for the General Population," will feature panelists reviewing and exploring possible solutions relating to deceptive practices. Speakers include Nancy Stacy, master gemologist appraiser for JBS Appraisals; Antoinette Matlins, author and consumer advocate; and C.R. Beesley, president of the AGL.

The conference will take place at the Sands Expo/Venetian Convention Center from 1:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. on Friday, June 1, followed by cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Registration is $60 for AGA members and their guests, $80 for non-members. For more information, visit the AGA's Web site, Accreditedgemologists.org, or call (619) 501-5444.
