Diamond industry players gearing up for Basel

Ramat Gan, Israel--A total of 18 Israeli diamond exporters will participate in Baselworld 2009, scheduled for March 26-April 2 in Basel, Switzerland.

The companies will exhibit mainly in Hall 3, where the loose-diamond category is concentrated.

According to a media release, most of the Israeli exhibitors are looking forward to an active show in Basel, including Lior Eshed of large-stone specialist Gemstar-Eshed Diam, who expects a lot of traffic and some transactions.

"Basel always attracts buyers of large stones. I don't see any reason for that to change this year," he stated in the release. "Of course the level of sales will be less than last year, which was a record year for Basel."

An online mini-site, located here, is enabling buyers to access information about exhibitors before the show.

In addition, the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI) will have an information and image booth in Hall 3.1, NO1, and will host a press conference.

This year's press conference--a lunch, not a breakfast--will feature IDI Managing Director Eli Avidar unveiling the IDI's new marketing campaign, as well as guest speaker John Peters, chief operating officer of Jewelry.com, who will speak about the power of the Internet in marketing diamonds and jewelry.

The lunch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.-1:30 p.m. on March 27 at the Basel Convention Center in the Osaka--Samarkand Congress Room.

In addition to the IDI, the International Gemological Institute (IGI) announced it will have a fully equipped working laboratory at Baselworld, marking the first time show attendees will have on-site access to IGI services.

"In this economy, every trade is vital to our industry," IGI Chief Executive Officer Roland Lorie said in a media release. "By offering full IGI laboratory services at Baselworld, our intent is to support more efficient and successful trades for exhibitors and buyers."
