Washington, D.C.—The Tiffany Diamond has made its Washington debut in an exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History.

The loan of the diamond celebrates a $1.1 million gift made to the museum by The Tiffany and Co. Foundation in June 2006 to establish a collection in its name as part of the museum's National Gem Collection.

Two other rare gemstones purchased for the National Gem Collection through the Tiffany and Co. endowment also appear on display: a rare, purple 40.1-carat elbaite and a 15.93-carat green garnet.

The Tiffany Diamond represents one of the largest fancy-yellow diamonds ever discovered. It weighed 287.42 carats when found in the rough in South Africa in 1877. Tiffany and Co. bought the gemstone, named it and cut it into a cushion shape of 128.54 carats with 82 facets to maximize brilliance. The stone appears in the "Bird on a Rock" setting, designed in the early 1960s by Jean Schlumberger.
