RJC amends diamond definition

Differentiates between 'natural' and 'lab-grown' stones

London--The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) is retracting and rewriting its definition of a diamond, the organization has announced.

On March 17, the London-based industry-watchdog organization issued a press release stating that it was expanding its definition of a diamond to include laboratory-grown stones, a move made to welcome lab-grown diamond producers as RJC members and participants in the RJC System of Certification.

The definition for a diamond issued at that time was: a mineral (natural or laboratory-grown) consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized with a cubic structure in the isometric system.

However, according to a press release issued on March 25, following "industry misapprehension as to its meaning and intent," the RJC is rewriting the definition to clearly differentiate between natural and lab-grown diamonds.

The new definitions are:

--A diamond is a natural mineral consisting essentially of pure carbon crystallized with a cubic structure in the isometric system. Its hardness on the Mohs scale is 10, its specific gravity is approximately 3.52, it has a refractive index of approximately 2.42 and it can be found in many colors.

--A laboratory-grown/synthetic diamond is any object or product that has been either partially or wholly crystallized or re-crystallized due to human intervention such that it meets the requirements specified in the definition of the word "diamond," with the exception of being non-natural.
