WDC supports U.N. proposal to improve diamond-trade security

New York—In the wake of this week's report from the United Nations (U.N.) on the possible threat to diamond control systems between the Ivory Coast and Ghana, the World Diamond Council (WDC) continued to stress vigilance.

The WDC released a statement on Oct. 10 urging members to act with the greatest caution in regard to imports of rough diamonds that have Kimberley Process (KP) certificates originating from Ghana.

The organization renewed its earlier call to the Chair of the KP and participant nations "to act swiftly to resolve the serious issue of reports that rough diamonds from the Ivory Coast are being smuggled into Ghana, bypassing Kimberley Process procedures."

While the report found no sign of gross violations, and the potential volume of rough diamonds being smuggled from the Ivory Coast through Ghana is considered small, it suggests diamonds from the country—which is currently banned from exporting diamonds—could be passing through Ghana. The WDC is concerned that risks highlighted in the U.N. report threaten the legitimate diamond trade and the integrity of the KP, maintaining "one diamond traded in this way is one too many."

The WDC said it supports and will strictly adhere to the recommendations made in the report and continue work to ensure that the issue is dealt with immediately.

"In conclusion, the WDC supports civil society's call for these concerns to be a key agenda point at the forthcoming Kimberley Process Plenary meeting in Botswana next month," the WDC stated.
