New system snuffs out synthetics

Jerusalem—The Israel Diamond Exchange (IDE) and the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) are using a new system that can detect synthetic diamonds.

Called the EGL SpectroGEM, the $500,000 spectroscopic system uses technological simulation and is able to map the movement of light through a diamond.

The EGL SpectroGEM can also detect if the diamond has passed through a high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) process, which would make it a treated stone.

Using these results, the EGL is able to detect if it's dealing with a natural, synthetic or treated stone.

Both EGL Israel Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner Guy Benhamou and IDE President Avi Paz said this system will be key to protecting the integrity of the diamond industry.

"The World Federation of Diamond Bourses guided EGL with a standards association stamp a while ago stating that treated stones need to be suitably identified. In practice there is a fear of treated stones leaking into the trade of natural stones. For the diamantaires and for the whole industry, which rolls $7 billion a year, we are talking about a danger of image damage," Benhamou said.

Paz said the use of the EGL SpectroGEM will help to ensure customers are getting what they paid for when buying a diamond.

"Today everything is about ensuring consumer confidence. The consumer needs to be sure what kind of diamond they are buying," he said.
