Diamond leaders to discuss state of Kimberley Process

Antwerp, Belgium—Diamond industry leaders will gather in Antwerp, Belgium, at the end of June and take stock of the results of the Kimberley Certification Process, which was established five years ago.

The Sixth Annual Meeting of the World Diamond Council, hosted by the Antwerp World Diamond Centre, will be held from June 30-July 1.

The annual meeting was established in 2000 to coordinate the international diamond and jewelry sector's campaign against conflict diamonds.

Among the guests of honor at the 2008 meeting will be Prime Minister Yves Leterme of Belgium, Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht of Belgium and De Beers Managing Director Gareth Penny.

"The World Diamond Council was created eight years ago—in Antwerp—in the midst of a humanitarian crisis," World Diamond Council Chairman Eli Izhakoff said in a media release. "While that crisis has largely been alleviated—as a result of the diamond industry's resolute actions across the board to end the trade in conflict diamonds—we need to continue and identify where rough diamonds without Kimberly Process certificates possibly could enter the market and put a definite stop to it."

Those who have not yet registered for the meeting can do so on the World Diamond Council's Web site, Worlddiamondcouncil.be.
