Sotheby's St. Moritz 'Magnificent Jewels' sale tops $8 million

St. Moritz, Switzerland—Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels sale here brought in $8.6 million, with the top lot—a 10.97-carat marquise-shaped, D-color diamond ring—going for $583,985.

Other top sellers included a diamond necklace for $282,259; a Van Cleef and Arpels diamond necklace and earrings for $282,259; a diamond necklace, circa 1910, for $262,793; and a 13.72-carat fancy-yellow-diamond ring for $243,327.

David Bennett, chairman of Jewellery Europe and the Middle East, and Brett O'Connor, head of Sotheby's in Geneva, commented on the success of the sale: They said the results, in particular the sale of the top lot, demonstrate the continued demand for high-quality diamonds.

Also performing well were signed pieces, including a diamond and sapphire "Panther" demi-parure by Cartier that brought in nearly double its estimate, selling for $233,594.
