AGA to demystify diamond grading in Vegas

Las Vegas—The Accredited Gemologists Association (AGA) will give gemologists a better understanding of the "why's" and "how's" of diamond grading during its 2008 Las Vegas conference.

The conference is scheduled for May 30, coinciding with the JCK Las Vegas show, at The Platinum Hotel and Spa from 1:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m., with a cocktail reception immediately following.

The session will help gemologists sort out what goes into the decisions behind what ends up on the diamond-grading reports issued by labs such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the American Gem Society (AGS) and the Gem Certification and Assurance Lab (GCAL).

It will include a first-time "virtual" hands-on presentation, tips on how major labs make critical decisions related to high-clarity/high-color and split-grade stones, and personal insights from GCAL Laboratory Director Dan Gillen and AGS Laboratory Director Peter Yantzer.

Following the diamond-grading workshop will be a presentation of the AGA position paper on color-grading fluorescent diamonds and recommendations on important changes to procedures used by diamond-grading laboratories.

The cost is $75 for AGA and GemA members and guests, and $95 for non-members.

For more information, visit the AGA's Web site, Accreditedgemologists.org, or call the AGA headquarters at (619) 501-5444.
