New chair, vice chair at helm of GJEPC
October 02, 2008
Mumbai, India—Members of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), India's national jewelry promotion organization, unanimously elected new leadership at a meeting held earlier this week in India. According to a release from the GJEPC, members elected Vasant Mehta, the GJEPC's current vice chairman, as the new chairman, replacing outgoing chairman Sanjay Kothari, who completed his two-year term, leading the GJEPC from 2006-2008. Serving at Mehta's side will be Rajiv Jain, who previously served as chairman of the Jaipur region for the council. Mehta said he accepts the chairman's position as one of great honor and great responsibility. "I have a series of tasks to accomplish in times to come and I look forward to the similar support and cooperation extended to the past chairman to take the industry to new heights," he said. A second-generation diamantaire, Mehta is founder and senior partner of M/S. V. Rameshchandra and Co. in Mumbai. He joined the GJEPC in 1969 and has served in numerous capacities with the council. In addition, he is also a representative of the GJEPC in the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), is vice president of the International Diamond Manufacturers Association and is a special advisor to the diamond industry in China. Jain is the promoter and director of Vaibhav Gems Ltd., the first-ever public company in the jewelry sector from Jaipur, and is chairman of Sambhav Gems Ltd. He has held other positions within the GJEPC, including convener of the Colour Gemstone Panel. In addition, he once served as director of the International Colored Gemstone Association, was honorary secretary for the Jaipur Jewellery Show and served as vice president of the Jewellers' Association of Jaipur.
