De Beers names new head of Russian operations

Johannesburg, South Africa—De Beers has announced the appointment of Nigel Kieser to general director, De Beers Russia.

Kieser has a first-class degree in mining geology and a Ph.D. in exploration geology. He joins De Beers from Rio Tinto where his responsibilities included the company's exploration and business-development activities in Russia.

He will relocate to Moscow with his family in early 2007 to take responsibility of the company's representative office. Spokeswoman Lynette Hori says Kieser replaces Ray Clark, who retired at the end of June 2005.

The move follows De Beers September announcement—in a joint statement with Russian diamond company Alrosa—that the two would examine opportunities for joint diamond prospecting and exploration activities in Russia and eventually other regions of the world.
