GIA updates reports on laser-manufacturing remnants

October 09, 2006

Carlsbad, Calif.—With the use of laser technology becoming increasingly common in the diamond-manufacturing process, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Laboratory said it would update its method for reporting these features.

According to the GIA lab, the markings—known as laser-manufacturing remnants—are unintentional characteristics of the manufacturing process and do not represent a deliberate attempt to alter the diamond's clarity grade or appearance.

"GIA is updating its method of reporting these features to more clearly differentiate between a deliberate 'laser treatment' on a diamond and an 'unintended laser-manufacturing remnant,'" said Tom Moses, senior vice president of GIA Laboratory and Research, in a statement.

Characteristics associated with laser manufacturing are surface grooves, surface-reaching marks or completely internal marks that may be associated with surrounding fractures.

GIA had been reporting internal remnants as "laser drilling" and surface remnants as "laser grooves." Diamonds with the remnants were said to have laser treatments.

Now these unintended surface remains will be covered by the GIA lab's assessment of polish, and internal laser remnants will show up in the report's clarity portion, rather than in the "comments" field. The lab will not alter how it reports internal laser drilling—both internal and surface-reaching.

Those who have diamonds with GIA reports with entries in the comments field noting "internal laser drilling" or "laser grooves" may resubmit those diamonds to the lab for re-evaluation at no charge. They must indicate that the diamond is being submitted for review of laser characteristics and include the original report.
