Geneva—
Sotheby's has announced that it will offer the largest flawless brilliant-cut diamond ever to appear at auction at its "Magnificent Jewels" sale in Geneva on Nov. 14.
The diamond—an 84.37-carat brilliant-cut D-color stone with flawless clarity—is estimated at $12 million-$16 million.
In addition to its extraordinary carat weight (which is unprecedented for a brilliant-cut diamond of this quality at auction according to Sotheby's), the diamond has also received the highest possible grading from the Gemological Institute of America. The institute declares the stone is D-color with flawless clarity, and that its cut, polish and symmetry have all been graded "Excellent."
"We are very privileged to have been chosen as the auction house to offer this magnificent and unique stone, and we aim to provide the perfect arena for it to receive the exposure that it deserves," David Bennett, jewelry chairman for Sotheby's Europe and the Middle East, said in a media release. "In my 32-year career, this stone ranks among the most beautiful diamonds I have ever seen."
Sotheby's has had the privilege of auctioning some of the most expensive diamonds in the world, including the 100.10-carat Star of the Season, which was sold by auctioneer Bennett for $16.5 million in May 1995. It remains the most expensive jewel ever to have been sold at auction.
The diamond, along with other highlights from the Magnificent Jewels sale, will be on view at the following locations in advance of the sale: Hong Kong, Oct. 3-8; Paris, Oct. 11-12; New York, Oct. 14-17; Rome, Oct. 18-19; Los Angeles, Oct. 22; London, Oct. 24-26; Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Oct. 29-30; Bahrain, Oct. 31-Nov. 1; Geneva, Nov. 10-13, selected lots, Nov. 14.
The winning bidder will have the honor of naming the stone.
