Antwerp, Belgium—In a move that gets its diamond message bouncing, the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) will sponsor the Antwerp Giants, a basketball team that will change its name to the Antwerp Diamond Giants.

In addition to the name change, the team's jerseys and logo will be modified with the line "Diamonds love Antwerp."

Earlier, the AWDC announced its support for Basket loves Kids, a youth basketball initiative of the Giants, through a fund-raiser to be held on Aug. 29. The program brings together youngsters from different backgrounds in a series of street basketball games to encourage their integration into the Belgian community.

Both the diamond sector and the Antwerp Diamond Giants decided to extend their cooperation beyond this initiative that would blend kids of different cultures.

"We are very happy with this collaboration with one of the economic driving forces of the city. Thanks to the support of the diamond community, we will be able to maximize our sports efforts," Antwerp Diamond Giants President Roger Roels said in a statement.

AWDC spokesman Philip Claes said the organization and the diamond community have been suffering from a lack of visibility and presence.

"From now on, that will change. With this support, we aim to strengthen our bond with the city of Antwerp through one of its most important sports clubs," he said. "Furthermore, the Giants are now our international ambassadors, as they will play international games this season. We will be their biggest supporter."
