GCAL debuts Ideal Cut diamond cert

New York—The Gem Certification and Assurance Lab (GCAL) debuted its new Ideal Cut diamond-grading certificate at the JA New York Winter Show on Sunday.

GCAL hopes the new certificate will alleviate any confusion created by the number of revisions to percentages and angles that have constituted the "theoretical" ideal-cut diamond over the years, as well as create an important analysis tool to assist in selling diamonds.

"The GCAL Ideal Cut diamond-grading certificate sets a standard for ideal-cut diamonds that will generate higher confidence among buyers and sellers, as well as higher value, greater demand, and ultimately, greater sales and profits for jewelers," GCAL President Donald A. Palmieri said in a media release.

According to GCAL, the ideal-cut diamond is based on "triple ideal" parameters where the diamond is "excellent" in all three ratings: proportion: girdle thickness and culet size; finish: polish and symmetry; and direct-light assessment: optical brilliance and optical symmetry.

GCAL's optical light-performance system measures and analyzes actual light return and optical symmetry that reveals the cutter's craft, and allows buyers and sellers to judge the mosaic of facets that reveal a true ideal-cut diamond's maximum beauty.
