Hip-hop mogul Simmons to announce diamond initiative

New York—Upon his return from a fact-finding mission to Africa, Russell Simmons is set to announce initiatives related to the diamond industry and his company, Simmons Jewelry Co.

Simmons' wife, co-owner Kimora Lee Simmons, Dr. Benjamin Chavis, co-chairman of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, and Scott Rauch, president of Simmons Jewelry Co., will join Simmons in making the announcement.

The delegation is on a nine-day mission to South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique. According to a media alert, the initiative involves the diamond industry and Simmons Jewelry Co. and will be meant to empower the lives of African people and communities where diamonds are a natural resource.

Simmons will hold a press conference on Tuesday, Dec. 5, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Manhattan.

"I'm funded by the Diamond Information Center and am here to promote the transparency and integrity that is found in the conflict-free, greatest diamonds in the world (which to me represents the truth)," Simmons said in a statement upon arrival in South Africa yesterday. "I sincerely believe that the more people I can mobilize to support this mission, the greater chance we'll have to improve the lives of the African people."
