IDI launches major China initiative

Ramat Gan, Israel—In a move that affirms the importance of the Chinese market, the Israel Diamond Institute (IDI) has announced the launch of a new strategic campaign focusing on the country's diamond industry.

The campaign will kick off in a weeklong series of events in Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai. These include an official delegation of Israeli diamond industry representatives to China; the formal launch of the Beijing initiative in an event at the Israeli embassy there; the inauguration of the IDI Chinese Portal, Israelidiamond.co.il/cn, at a luncheon in conjunction with the Shanghai Diamond Exchange; the official opening of an IDI office in Hong Kong; ongoing trade show participation in China; and developing activities with the media.

The campaign is the culmination of a six-month strategic-planning process in which the IDI identified, researched and explored future marketing directions for the Israeli industry.

"The Chinese economy is undergoing historical changes of fast-paced growth and the emergence of a strong consumer market," IDI Chairman Moti Ganz said in a media release." The Israeli diamond industry believes in the enormous potential of this market."

Ganz said the IDI would try and emulate the type of cooperation and partnership that characterizes relations between the two countries in the areas of technology and agriculture.

"China is not only a country or a nation; it is an entire continent," IDI Managing Director Eliz Avidar said. "We believe that China represents the future of The Israeli diamond industry."

Avidar noted that to enhance Israel's presence in China, it is important to reach out to the Chinese in their own language and territory.

"It is for that reason that we are launching the first Chinese-language portal Web site of any diamond center in the world and opening an office in Hong Kong to serve the entire region," he said.

The new portal creates a business-to-business marketplace that can lead to real transactions. It is geared specifically to the Chinese market and includes a powerful search engine to locate Israeli diamond companies by type of goods, a Diamond Needs Board with a real-time alert system, news and information on how to conduct business with Israeli companies.

The IDI has increased its presence at trade shows in China to include five shows with pavilions that feature up to 40 companies under the roof of the Israeli Diamond Industry. That expansion includes two trade fairs in Hong Kong and one each in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Macau.

The initiative will include ongoing public relations and media activities.
