Moscow—The Moscow Diamond Bourse (MDB) will celebrate its acceptance into the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) on Dec. 13 and 14.

The bourse became the WFDB's 26th member when the general assembly unanimously accepted its application during the World Diamond Congress held in Tel Aviv, Israel, this past June.

"The gathering in Moscow will afford us the opportunity to thank the leadership of the industry for the support that they afforded us in obtaining WFDB membership" MDB President Lev Polyakov said in a statement. "It also will enable us to underscore what we believe is our bourse's primary mission—and that is to provide a trading platform for the developing diamond and jewelry sector in Russia and the other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)."

He noted that the region has enormous potential as a future market with a population of more than 360 million.

"It is our aim is to help realize that potential," he said.

Industry leaders from the Russian and international diamond and jewelry industries will be involved in the celebratory proceedings, which begin with a conclave on the morning of Dec. 13. Members of the Russian government and parliament, representatives of the diplomatic core and the media will also take part.

Guests will be able to meet with representatives of the diamond and jewelry trade from across Russia and the CIS during on open house on Dec. 14.

Among the industry leaders who will participate in the event are Ernest Blom, president of the WFDB, Gaetano Cavalieri, president of CIBJO, Eli Izhakoff, chairman of the World Diamond Council and Avi Paz, vice president of the WFDB. The celebration will culminate at a gala dinner that will feature the presentation of an award to the Russian Diamond Chamber, congratulating the sister bourse on its 10th anniversary.

The MDB has more than 40 members-a figure that's doubled since the start of the year. It includes representatives from Russia, the Ukraine, Belarus and Latvia.
