Los Angeles—Non-governmental organizations Global Witness and Amnesty International, along with representatives of the soon-to-release Blood Diamond movie, have unveiled a new Web site offering visitors information about conflict diamonds and opportunities for involvement in the issue.

Under the "Take Action" heading, Blooddiamondaction.org urges consumers to see the film, write to the World Diamond Council or to U.S. Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs Daniel S. Sullivan, and to download information about conflict diamonds before buying a diamond.

The home page of the site states that "blood diamond" conflicts have caused the death of an estimated 3.7 million people in Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

"Even now, up to $23 million of conflict diamonds are entering the legitimate diamond trade annually from Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa," the site states.

The site also includes the Blood Diamond trailer, stills from the film and a link to its official Web site.

Alex Yearsley, a spokesman for Global Witness, did not immediately return calls for comment about the site.

In a related story, representatives of The Oprah Winfrey Show have confirmed reports that Blood Diamond and the topic of conflict diamonds will be featured in an upcoming episode. At press time, the air date had yet to be announced.
