De Beers reports on progress in Africa

Washington, D.C.—The De Beers Family of Companies recently updated the world on the progress in Africa and the role De Beers plays in the continent's sustainable development.

In both a speech by De Beers Group Managing Director Gareth Penny and in its 2007 Report to Society, De Beers shared facts, statistics and philosophies on how Africa's natural resources are being translated into shared national wealth.

In addressing the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C., last week, Penny highlighted eight insights De Beers has gained from operating in Africa. These include: help small companies develop by outsourcing the supply chain, commit to building a citizen-run operation and support international efforts to eliminate corruption and support good governance.

In his address, Penny said that while the challenges of operating in Africa are considerable, "There's another side to the story—one we call 'Africa working'—where Africans are not only lifting themselves out of poverty, but collectively lifting their nations to new levels of sustainable prosperity."

In addition, in its Report to Society released last week, De Beers stated that:

—Payments to partners, joint ventures and suppliers amounted to $4.9 billion.
—100 percent of De Beers diamonds are conflict-free.
—The lost-time injury frequency rate improved, as did the lost-time injury severity rate.
—De Beers spent $19 million on social investment, which was disbursed to more than 750 projects.
—More than 185,000 hectares (one hectare is equal to about 2.8 acres) of owned and managed property has been set aside as nature reserves where biodiversity research is conducted.
