Ramat Gan, Israel—Delegations from a majority of African diamond-producing countries will attend Israel's Third International Rough Diamond Conference.

The attendance of these nations at the conference is in keeping with the Israel Diamond Institute's (IDI) goal of improving relations between the Israeli diamond industry and African diamond-producing countries.

The conference is scheduled for Feb. 11-12 at the Dan Panorama Hotel in Tel Aviv.

Among the African representatives slated to speak at the conference are: Angolan Minister of Geology and Mines Manuel Africano; Botswana Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Ponatshego Kedikilwe; Liberian Minister of Land, Mines and Energy Eugene Shannon and Democratic Republic of Congo Deputy Mining Minister Victor Kasongo.

Other nations slated to be in attendance are Brazil, Canada and China.

Companies expected to attend include De Beers, represented by Group Managing Director Gareth Penny and Diamond Trading Co. Managing Director Varda Shine, and senior officials from Gem Diamonds, Petra Diamonds, Rockwell Diamonds, Shore Gold, Stellar Diamonds and Stornoway Diamond Corp.

IDI Chairman Moti Ganz said the conference is being held as major changes take place in the industry worldwide.

"This is very significant juncture for the rough-diamond industry, coming only weeks after major changes in the industry that have created serious challenges for manufacturing centers around the world. We chose to hold the conference at this time in order to explore ways to expand and augment current and future sources of rough supply," he said.
