GIA LabDirect opens in Tokyo

Carlsbad, Calif.—The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has announced that the AGT Gem Laboratory in Tokyo has begun operations as a GIA LabDirect consolidator this week.

The GIA announced the creation of LabDirect last August to widen access to its lab services through an international network of local take-in windows and consolidators.

"GIA is expanding its presence internationally, and we want to make our services accessible to more people," GIA Laboratory and Research Senior Vice President Tom Moses said in a statement.

Consolidators will act as a diamond-industry forwarding service by consolidating stones from local regions and shipping them to the GIA Lab. Local drop-off and pick-up shipment points are meant to help the maximum number of clients move their goods to the lab to get services in a safe, expedient and cost-effective way.

As part of the process, the consolidator has to prepare the diamonds for shipping according to agreed-upon protocol, communicate grading results to end clients and collect payment.

"We're glad to be a part of GIA LabDirect and its efforts to bring GIA's international services conveniently and safely to customers in Japan," AGT Gem Laboratory President Yoshiko Doi said.

Early last month, the GIA opened its new Hong Kong Laboratory Services Center, which provides preliminary-processing lab work and is a take-in window and consolidator for the Hong Kong area.
