NCDIA: Natural colored diamonds take off

Las Vegas—The Natural Color Diamond Association (NCDIA) held its third annual year-in-review event at the JCK Las Vegas show last night, with both suppliers and retailers celebrating the burgeoning category.

"The last year has been an exceptional year for the NCDIA and, quite frankly, for the natural colored-diamond category," NCDIA Executive Director Sam Merksamer said.

Merksamer said membership in the organization has more than doubled to about 80 companies. In addition, retail membership has increased significantly, from four retailers in 2006 to more than 30, with 15 of the retailers American Gem Society jewelers.

"The growth of our retailer membership gives us a direct link to the consumer," Merksamer said.

He noted that the public is driving the interest in natural colored diamonds. The fact that e-tailer Blue Nile recently started selling the stones is another indication of their growing popularity and importance for retailers.

"It's a must-have category for every luxury jeweler," he said.

In addition to increasing its membership, the NCDIA has also doubled its outreach efforts, launched a popular Web site and has been developing a retail-training program that will officially debut this fall, Merksamer said.

While increasing its presence at trade shows and other industry events, the NCDIA has also developed more marketing materials such as its first-ever Las Vegas show directory of exhibiting members.
