Ramat Gan, Israel—Israel is seeking to position itself as a manufacturer of unique jewelry through a new, local design competition.

According to a media release, the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies (IDI), in conjunction with the Israel Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor and the Israel Jewelry Manufacturers Association, is sponsoring a Designed-in-Israel diamond jewelry competition.

In addition to promoting Israel as a manufacturer of original diamond jewelry, the contest also pays homage to the nation's 60th anniversary.

It also aims to encourage the use of Israeli diamonds by local designers and foster cooperation between Israeli jewelry designers and the diamond industry.

"Israel has a long-standing tradition of jewelry design, and many of its designers have achieved international recognition," IDI Managing Director Eli Avidar said in the release. "Through this competition, we are hoping to bring about cooperative efforts that will combine the strength of the Israeli diamond industry with the outstanding creative design capabilities we have here, to the benefit of all."

The competition is open only to jewelry designers living in Israel.

According to the release, designs should reflect the country's culture and environment, and must incorporate polished or rough diamonds of at least one carat.

Preliminary designs are due by Nov. 2.

Designs approved by the panel of judges must be submitted as final jewelry by Dec. 31.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the top three winning designs.

Yehuda Kassif, IDI's jewelry promotion director and art director of the country's Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Museum, said that while there are many jewelry design competitions held around the world, this one is unique in that it draws inspiration from Israel specifically.

"We are sure that this competition will yield many excellent creations, which we hope to exhibit here and abroad," he said.
