New Gemesis site offers 'retailer locator'

Sarasota, Fla.—Gemesis, the Florida-based company known for its lab-grown colored diamonds, has redesigned its Web site.

The redesigned site, available at the same URL, Gemesis.com, features an explanation of Gemesis and its lab-grown diamonds, the latest news on the company and a "find a retailer" feature, which allows site visitors to search for a store near them that carries Gemesis' stones.

The site launched in late August, according to a release from the company.

The new site is the latest in a line of happenings for the company this year.

On May 31 at the JCK Las Vegas show, the company, which previously concentrated on yellow diamonds, announced it would begin shipping pink stones to jewelers by early 2009.

Company officials said the pink stones would be about 1-2 carats rough to start, and about 30 percent to 50 percent of that weight once polished.

In addition, in July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rejected a petition from the Jewelers Vigilance Committee and nine other trade associations that requested the FTC use its industry guides to ban the use of the term "cultured" to describe lab-grown stones.

In its ruling, the FTC stated that cultured is an acceptable term to use for lab-grown stones, provided it is used in conjunction with one of the following terms: "laboratory created," "laboratory grown," "[manufacturer-name] created" or "synthetic."
