Vienna bourse VP killed in apparent robbery

Antwerp, Belgium—Werner Haas, 46, the vice president of the Diamant-Club Wien, in Vienna, Austria, was shot and killed during the course of an apparent robbery at his home office on Sept. 27.

Ernest Blom, president of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), expressed shock at the news. On behalf of the membership of the WFDB, he extended condolences to Mr. Haas' family and colleagues in a statement.

"This is a senseless and outrageous tragedy," Blom said. "Nothing that we do or handle could ever justify such as an act, and we hope that the Austrian police authorities will be able to bring the perpetrators to justice as soon as possible. Our hearts go out to Werner's family and to his colleagues and friends at the Diamant-Club Wien."

Haas was killed by gunfire while at work in an office attached to his home. The diamantaire and jeweler was the vice president and spokesman for the Vienna bourse.
