Warner Bros. rebuts charge by 'Blood Diamond' extra

New York—Warner Bros. has already begun giving back to the community where it filmed Blood Diamond, a studio representative told the New York Post.

In a "Page Six" article that ran yesterday, a Warner Bros. representative refuted the claims of an orphaned amputee film extra that the studio has reneged on a pledge to buy him and 27 other extras prosthetic limbs.

"There were no broken promises," the representative told the Post in response to the orphan's claims, which ran in the newspaper on Tuesday. "In fact, the cast, crew and studio have set up the Blood Diamond Fund, which has already begun to dig wells, build classrooms and help the communities that so graciously welcomed us into their homes and villages."

In a separate interview, the movie's director, Edward Zwick, told Deadline Hollywood Daily that those involved with the film created the Blood Diamond Fund, totaling several hundred thousand dollars, earmarked for specific needs of villages and neighborhoods, including the replacement of prosthetic limbs. Money from the fund has gone to children's organizations that distribute prosthetics, according to Deadline Hollywood Daily.

Zwick told Deadline Hollywood Daily that he believes the Post report came from someone bearing "ill will" toward the film.

"This is a very cynical and appalling tack to take, and in the worst taste, especially given what we all tried to do while we were there," he said.
