Ramat Gan, Israel--L.L.D. Diamonds Ltd., owned by billionaire diamantaire Lev Leviev, once again tops the annual list of Israel's largest exporters of polished diamonds.

According to a release issued on Wednesday by the Israel Diamond Institute, L.L.D. exported $417 million in polished diamonds in 2008.

Second to L.L.D. was Leo Schachter Ltd., with $352 million in polished-diamond exports, followed by A. Dalumi Diamonds with $182 million.

In fourth place is Espeka Diamonds International Ltd. with $159 million in polished-diamond exports and, in fifth place, Yerushalmi Bros. with $150 million.

Rounding out the top 10 are: A.A. Rachminov Ltd. with $141 million in polished-diamond exports, PDD Diamonds with $121 million, M.I.D. House of Diamonds Ltd. with $111 million, Niru Diamonds Israel (1987) Ltd. with $91 million and SN Asia (Israel) Ltd. with $86 million.

According to Israel Diamond Controller Shmuel Mordechai, the net polished-diamond exports for the top 25 exporters total $2.567 billion, accounting for 41 percent of Israel's total net polished diamonds.

The list does not include 17 companies that chose not to publish their export figures, he said.

Overall, Israel's polished-diamond exports dropped 12 percent last year, from $7.075 billion in 2007 to $6.24 billion in 2008.

And while all the listed exporters experienced a decline in business, Moti Ganz, chairman of the Israel Diamond Institute Group of Companies and president of the Israel Diamond Manufacturers Association, said Israel would retain its position as a worldwide leader in the industry.

"The world economic crisis is affecting all sectors, not only diamonds," he said in a media release. "The Israeli diamond industry is working hard to find ways to succeed in these difficult conditions. I am confident that we will see the fruits of these efforts in the near future."

The annual list of diamond exporters is published by the Israel Diamond Controller's Office in the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor.
